CBI FILES CHARGESHEETS RELATING TO MURDER OF SH. YASHWANT SONAWANE, THE THEN ADDITIONAL COLLECTOR, MALEGAON (MAHARASHTRA)

The Central Bureau of Investigation CBI has filed Charge-sheet in a case related to the murder of Sh. Yashwant Sonawane, Additional Collector, Malegaon in broad day light on 25.01.2011 on a Dhaba located along Manmad Nandgaon Road, Dist. Nashik (Maharashtra), against three accused under sections 143, 144, 148, 149, 333, 353, 506(2) and 302 of IPC in the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Manmad, Dist. Nashik on 10.10.2011. The charge is abated against the prime accused Late Popat Dattu Shinde who also succumbed to burn injuries when the deceased Sh. Yashwnat Sonawane was burnt to death. In the said case CBI has filed another chargesheet before the Juvenile Justice Board, Manmad, Dist., Nasik on 11.10.2011,as one of the accused involved in the crime was a minor at the time of commission of offence.

Further, CBI filed separate Charge-sheet in same case against six accused persons under sections 120-B IPC r/w. Section 3 & 7 of the Essential Commodities Act r/w. section 3(1) (B) & (C) of Kerosene (Restriction On use and Fixation of Ceiling Price) Order, 1993 in the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class, Manmad, Dist. Nashik on 10.10.2011. The charge is abated against the prime accused Late Popat Dattu Shinde as he is no more. In this connection, CBI has filed another Chargesheet before the Juvenile Justice Board, Manmad, Dist. Nashik on 11.10.2011 as one of the accused involved in the crime related to the violation of The Essential Commodities Act and related provision was a minor at the time of commission of offence.

Further investigation of the case under provisions of MCOCA Act is pending as the Hon'ble High Court of Judicature at Bombay has stayed the operation of the order of Special IGP, Nashik granting approval to local police to apply MCOCA in the case.

Initially the case was registered by Manmad City Police Station, Dist. Nashik. Ten accused were arrested by them during investigation. CBI took up the investigation on 08.04.2011 on the request of Maharashtra Govt. and further directions from Govt. of India.

The public is reminded that the above findings are based on the investigation done by CBI and evidence collected by it. Under the Indian Law, the accused are presumed to be innocent till their guilt is finally established after a fair trial.
