SENIOR ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER OF NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF EPIDEMIOLOGY SENTENCED IN A CBI CASE

The Special Judge for CBI Cases, Chennai has convicted Shri.J.P.Verma, the then Senior Administrative Officer, NIE, KMR, Chetput, Chennai and sentenced him to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment for two years with fine of Rs. 15,000/-.

A case was registered by CBI on 08.01.2007 against Shri J.P.Verma, the then Sr. Administrative Officer, NIE, ICMR, Chetput , Chennai and Shri. S.Kumaran, former Sales Executive M/s. ACCEL ICIM Frontline Systems & Services Ltd., Chennai alleging that during 2000 -2001, the accused persons entered into a criminal conspiracy. In pursuance of the said conspiracy, Shri. J.P.Verma recommended to purchase eight computers and two CD writers at an exorbitant rates at M/s. ACCEL ICIM Frontline Systems & Services Ltd., Chennai and thereby caused wrongful loss to the tune Rs.1.70 lakhs to NIE, ICMR, Government of India and corresponding wrongful gain to M/s. ACCEL ICIM Systems & Services Ltd. Further, Shri J. P. Verma had abused his official position and accepted a computer system valued at Rs.29,306/- from M/s. ACCEL ICIM Systems and Services Ltd, Chennai for personal use without having made any payments to the said company as illegal gratification for the orders given to the company for the supply of computers and CD writers at exorbitant rates. During the course of investigation, since Shri. S. Kumaran had admitted his role in the conspiracy and given confession statement, he was taken as approver.

After the investigation of the case, a final report was filed against Shri. J.P.Verma by CBI before the court of Principal Special Judge for CBI Cases, Chennai U/s 120-B IPC and Sec. 7 and Sec 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The Trial Court found the accused guilty for the offences and convicted him.
