SENIOR ACCOUNTS OFFICER AND AN ENGINEER SENTENCED IN SEPARATE CASES OF BRIBERY

The Sepcial Judge for CBI cases, Ernakulam (Kerala) has convicted Sh. B. Menghani, the then Senior Accounts Officer, Inland Waterways Authority of India, Ministry of Shipping, Regional Office, Cochin and sentenced him to undergo three years Rigorous Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.50,000/- each for the offences punishable U/s 7 of PC Act and 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988.

The investigation revealed that Shri B. Menghani, while working as Senior Accounts Officer, lnland waterways Authority, Regional Office, Cochin had demanded and accepted an amount of Rs. 15,000/- being 2% of the bill amount as illegal gratification from the complainant, a contractor, for getting his contract bills passed. The accused was caught red handed by CBI on 24.03.2006 while demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs. 15,000/- from the complainant at the office of the accused at Cochin.

In another case the Special Judge, CBI cases, Jabalpur has convicted Shri Pankaj Mishra, Junior Engineer (Civil), BSNL, Jabalpur and sentenced him to undergo two years Rigorous Imprisonment with a total fine of Rs15,000/-.

A charge sheet was filed before the court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Jabalpur on 26.12.2009 U/s. 201 IPC and 7 & 13(2) r/w 13 (1)(d) Act, 1988 alleging that the accused Shri Pankaj Mishra, was caught red handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 5,000/- from the complainant for showing him favour in the measurement of civil maintenance works done by the complainant being a Civil Contractor with BSNL and payment of Running Bills amounting to Rs.2.5 lacs (approx) against the contract awarded to him by BSNL.
