TEN YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT TO TWELVE ACCUSED IN A NOTORIOUS PUNJAB NATIONAL BANK DACOITY CASE OF LUDHIANA IN 1987

            The Additional Judge TADA Court, Ludhiana has today convicted 12 accused persons, namely S/Shri Harjinder Singh @ Kali; Balwinder; Mohan Singh; Saroop Singh; Gurjant Singh; Avtar Singh; Harbhajan Singh; Sewa Singh; Assa Singh; Man Singh; Daljit Singh and Gursharan Singh @ Gama in the notorious Punjab National Bank Dacoity Case of 1987 and sentenced them to undergo ten years Rigorous Imprisonment.

 

            The Central Bureau of Investigation took up the investigation of the case on the request of Govt. of Punjab on 17/2/87. Earlier, the Punjab Police had registered a FIR No.26 on 12.2.87 U/s 395, 342,171 of IPC; Section 25/54/59 of Arms Act and Section 3 & 4 of TADA(P) Act at Police Station Division No.6, Ludhiana on the complaint from Chief Manager, PNB, Industrial Area Branch, Ludhiana(Punjab).

 

            It was alleged that during 1987, 21 hard core terrorists had looted Rs.5.7 crores from the strong room and currency chest of Reserve Bank of India maintained at Punjab National Bank, Industrial Area Branch, Ludhiana. A Special Investigation Team was constituted by CBI and a number of places were raided during a period of extreme terrorism in Ludhiana. Rs.87 lakh of the looted cash was recovered by CBI & several properties, vehicles etc. created out of the looted amount were also located and seized.

 

            After thorough investigation, CBI filed a charge sheet on 15.7.1988 in the Designated Court at Ludhiana. The Trial Court found the accused persons guilty and convicted them.
