THREE YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT TO THEN SUPERINTENDENT, PASSPORT OFFICE AND OTHER PRIVATE PERSONS IN A BRIBERY CASE

            The Special Judge for CBI cases, Visakhaptnam has convicted Smt. Jawangala Alivelu, the then Superintendent, Passport Office, Visakhapatnam; two Passport brokers (private Persons) i.e. Sri Ganta Laxmi Venkateswara Achari & Sri Ramabhuta Janardhana Rao and Sri Kopisetti Balaji, the then Private Security Guard posted at Passport Office, Visakhapatnam, Employed with a Visakhapatnam based private security firm in a bribery case. The Special Judge sentenced Smt. Jawangala Alivelu then Superintendent of Passport Office & Sri Ganta Laxmi Venkateswara Achari private person to undergo three years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs. 7,000/- & Rs. 5,000/- respectively; Sri Ramabhuta Janardhana Rao private person to undergo one year Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs. 2,000/- and Sri Kopisetti Balaji then Private Security Guard to undergo six month Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.1,000/-.

 

            It was alleged that during the month of February, 2008, the accused persons entered into a criminal conspiracy. In pursuance of the said conspiracy, private person (a Passport Broker) demanded an amount of Rs.4,500/- as bribe from the Complainant( a Passport holder), on behalf of Smt. G. Alivelu , the then Supdt. Passport Office, Visakhapatnam and for themselves for ECNR (Emigration Clearance Not Required) stamping on his passport. Subsequently, after registering the case, a trap was laid on 20-02-2008, and the accused was caught red handed while demanding & accepting the bribe of Rs.4,500/- from the Complainant on behalf of Public Servant.

 

            The Trial Court found the accused persons guilty and convicted them.
