         Shri Anil Sinha, Director, CBI today inaugurated 3-day India-US International Cooperation Workshop on Mutual Legal Assistance and Extradition at its HQ in New Delhi. This Workshop has been jointly organized by CBI, MHA, MEA and US Department of Justice (USDOJ).


         The key theme of the workshop is ‘Obtaining Evidence Located in USA’. The workshop will focus on procedures adopted by both the countries to seek and provide Mutual Legal Assistance, the provisions of India-USA Mutual Assistance Treaty including Asset Recovery/Forfeiture and Extradition procedures. The workshop will also discuss how to obtain information related to Bank Accounts and Digital Evidence from USA and the related laws of USA and Cyber crime issues, which are transnational in nature.


         Inaugurating the Conference, Director, CBI Shri Anil Sinha spoke of the importance of international cooperation to effectively tackle the activities of local, regional and international organized criminal groups and in strengthening the collaboration and cooperation with different countries in preventing, investigating and prosecuting the criminal offences.


         In view of the increased use of internet technology by contemporary criminals for the purpose of recruitment and radicalization, training, financing and coordinating attacks, Shri Sinha said that this Workshop would help to focus on understanding how to obtain electronic evidence and bank records from the US in their legal framework. He also highlighted that most of the servers are located in US and, hence, understanding of US Legal framework with regard to Stored Digital Information has become crucial. Director, CBI also stressed on asset recovery area where swift and sustained cooperation across the border is necessary.


         The 3-Day Workshop is being attended by senior officers, including IGPs, Director(Training), DIsG, Joint Director, Additional CP, Zonal Director, Additional Legal Advisor, SsP, Enforcement Officer & others from CBI, BPR&D, Enforcement Directorate, NCB, MHA, NIA, Delhi Police,  Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh.


         At the Inaugural Ceremony, Mr.Dan E.Stigall, Principal Attorney, Department of Justice, USA; Shri R.K.Dutta, Additional Director, CBI; Shri Bhagwan Shanker, Joint Secretary, IS-II, Ministry of Home Affairs and Shri O.P.Verma, Director of Prosecution, CBI were present.
