CBI FILES A CHARGESHEET AGAINST FOUR POSTAL OFFICIALS INCLUDING THEN DIRECTOR OF POSTAL SERVICES & OTHERS IN A CASE RELATING TO ALLEGED EXCHANGE OF DEMONETIZED CURRENCY NOTES OF RS.1.15 CRORE(APPROX)

            The Central Bureau of Investigation has recently filed a chargesheet U/s 120-B r/w 409 & 420 of IPC and Sec. 13(2) r/w 13(1)(c) & (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against then Senior Post Master & then Deputy Post Master, both of Navrangpura HO; then Director, Postal Services (DPS) and then Senior Superintendent of Post, Ahmedabad in a case relating to alleged exchange of demonetized currency notes more than Rs.1.15 crore(aprox).

            CBI had registered a case on 07.03.2017 U/s 120 B r/w 409 & 420 of IPC and Section 13(2) r/w 13(1)(c)&(d) of the PC Act, 1988 against three postal officials and unknown others on a complaint from Postal Department related to acts of omission or commission by postal staff of Post Office, Navrangpura HO, Ahmedabad, during demonetization period. It was alleged that demonetization was announced on 8.11.2016 and 09.11.2016 was a non- financial day. During inspection of Navrangpura HO Post Office, it was revealed that an amount of Rs.6,59,800/- (approx) was found unauthorizedly exchanged on 09.11.2016 as the currency notes of 100, 50, 20 and 10 denomination decreased to the tune of above amount as compared to the closing figures of 8.11.2016. It was further alleged that there was contradiction in reporting of exchange/ Withdrawn Old Series (WOS), in the records of Navrangpura HO, SSPO’s City Division and record of entry made in the excel sheet of the actual forms available in the branch.

            It was also alleged that then Director, Postal Services while posted in the Office of CPMG, Ahmedabad got amount of Rs.1.04 crore(approx.) through various officials of Postal Department & Post Offices. Out of which an amount of Rs.90 lakh(approx) was allegedly exchanged from Navrangpura Post Office, where said Senior Post Master and said Deputy Post Master were posted. Similarly, the said Senior Superintendent of Post, Navrangpura HO, Ahmedabad allegedly got exchanged Rs.11 lakh(approx) illegally from Navrangpura Post Office during the demonetization period.

            Searches were also conducted in & around Ahmedabad at 09 premises of accused which led to recovery of incriminating documents and also cash in new currency.

            During investigation, the said Director of Postal Services, HQ working in the Office of CPMG, Ahmedabad and Senior Superintendent of Post, Navrangpura HO, Ahmedabad were also arrested on 19.03.2017.

            After thorough investigation, a chargesheet was filed in the Designated Court at Ahmedabad.

            The public is reminded that the above findings are based on the investigation done by CBI and evidence collected by it. Under the Indian Law, the accused are presumed to be innocent till their guilt is finally established after a fair trial.
